Praying together as a couple is a GAME CHANGER for your relationship. I’m going to share exactly what it will do for the two of you and why it’s so important. I’m also going to give you 5 practical ways you can begin praying together today!

What are the benefits?

  • Increased intimacy

  • Deeper connection

  • Breaks down walls

  • Improved communication

  • Builds empathy & humility

  • Unconditional love

  • Strengthens faith

  • Closer to God

So how do you pray together as a couple?

  1. Pray from the heart. Take turns leading prayer; if he leads today, she leads tomorrow. The one leading has the job of asking the other what their intentions for the day are. Then the two can kneel together, join hands and one will lead prayer aloud. Start with thanking God for all of the blessings He has given, naming a few specifically. Then share both your own and your significant other’s prayer intentions, asking the Lord to hear and answer your prayers. Thank Him in advance for His faithfulness. You can close with an Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be, or simply entrusting your prayers to God and ending with the Sign of the Cross.

2. Pray with the daily Gospel. Whether you want to open your Bible at home, download the Laudate app, or click HERE to find it online, look at the Gospel of the day. Read the daily Gospel aloud together and then discuss. Ask one another what verses stuck out to each of you, what came to mind while reading through, how is God speaking to you through these words, what do you feel God is calling you to do, do you identify with a certain character or situation, etc.

3. Pray the Rosary. An amazing way to grow closer to Jesus is through meditating on His life and praying for the intercession of His mother, who knew Him best! If you need a guideline that will bring you step by step through the Rosary, you can find that HERE. A beautiful way to pray the Rosary as a couple is that each takes turns leading a decade. One person can pray the first half of each prayer and the other can follow by praying the second half of each prayer. Make sure to have each person offer up an intention at the start of the Rosary.

4. Choose a novena. Praying through the intercession of different saints can be a great way to find healing, overcome obstacles, grow in faith and connect with God & your spouse. The saints are all patrons of something; something that they struggled with, lived through, experienced or are otherwise known for. If you have something particular that the two of you are praying for together (i.e. children, a job, etc.) you can pray a novena to the saint who has been there before you & would love to pray for you. HERE you can find an extensive list of novenas to different saints that you can browse through.

5. Pray Tobit 8:5-8. This one is specifically for engaged and married couples. It is incredibly beautiful for couples to read through together and simply absorb the graces that God speaks through these verses. My husband and I prayed this every night of our engagement, at the encouragement of a priest friend, and now every day within marriage. We loved it so much that we chose it as one of the readings for our wedding Mass and both can now pray it by heart.

So now that you know what praying together as a couple will do for your own spiritual life & your relationship, what are you waiting for?! Start praying together today and continue every single day. You will grow so much in your own faith and so much with the one you love. If you aren’t use to praying out loud, praying with another person, or praying at all, you may feel a bit awkward in the beginning. That’s okay! The more you practice, the more comfortable you will feel. God will bless this time of prayer and the fruits will be undeniable. Let’s get praying!
