Hi, I'm Melissa.

Language is powerful. The words we speak to ourselves matter. The thoughts we repeat about our bodies, our abilities, and our lives shape the way we experience them.

We tend to live in ways that reinforce what we already believe to be true. Over time, those beliefs become self-fulfilling. That is why paying attention to our inner dialogue is so important, especially during seasons that require great courage and vulnerability. One of those seasons is childbirth.

Rewriting the Story Around Birth

So often, conversations about labor and delivery focus on fear and negativity. Many women enter pregnancy having only seen birth portrayed through dramatic media scenes that exaggerate pain and present birth as something overwhelming and traumatic.

When that is the only story we hear, it is no wonder so many women approach birth feeling anxious, unprepared, and unsure of their ability to do this. But it does not have to be that way.

God designed your body with incredible wisdom. You were created with the capacity to bring new life into the world. When we shift from fear to trust, from doubt to confidence, our entire experience can change. Choosing to speak life, truth, and encouragement over yourself is one simple but powerful way to do that.

Why Affirmations Matter

Affirmations are not about pretending everything is easy. They are about choosing truth when fear tries to take over. When you intentionally speak words of strength, faith, and peace, you help calm your nervous system, steady your emotions, and refocus your heart on God’s presence with you.

Even if you do not fully believe every affirmation at first, keep repeating them. Over time, they begin to reshape your mindset. You get to choose what you believe about your birth experience.

Creating Your Own Birth Affirmations

This is just a starting point. Pay attention to the fears and negative thoughts that come up when you think about birth. Write them down. Then gently challenge them, with truth. For every fearful thought, ask: What is a faith-filled, compassionate response to this?

Turn that response into an affirmation. Repeat your affirmations daily during pregnancy. Use them in prayer. Write them on cards. Keep them by your bed. Ask your spouse or support person to speak them over you during labor. They are powerful tools for preparation, peace, and perseverance.

Birth is not something you have to “get through.” It is something you are capable of, supported by God’s grace every step of the way. You are strong. You are chosen. You are not alone.

If you have favorite birth affirmations, I would love for you to share them in the comments and encourage other mamas on this journey. You’ve got this!
